The Fog of Wellington
I didn't take this photo, but I liked it. Fog has been a big theme over the past few months. The Wellington airport has fogged in for about 14 days since I've been here. I had to delay travel for a day because of the fog when my parents were here in March.
The photo shows how the fog can create microclimates around the city. I live about 15-20 minutes from the airport. But it can be relatively clear and sunny over here while the airport is fogged in. Bizarre. I've also learned to completely ignore the weather reports in NZ, they are nearly always wrong. The weather changes frequently, and everyone says Wellington is a place where you can get "4 seasons in a day."
Given that, I've found the recent hubbub in the UK around the new BBC weather maps amusing. The BBC started using new high-tech 3D graphics produced by the NZ Meteorological Service for its weather reports -- to the great pride of the Kiwis. However, they don't seem to have gone over as well in the UK. See article.
